README
Half-width katakana Type 1 fonts in SJIS encoding are provided to
integrate with the Wadalab fonts for use with, for example, the CJK
package. Auxiliary files to use the font with Unicode UTF8 encoding
are also provided. The origin of the font is the Wadalab gothic font
katakana glyphs, which have been modified to make up the JIS X 0201
set of half-width katakana characters using Fontforge. The Wadalab
fonts need to be available for this package to work. Installation
instructions and examples of usage are provided.

1 - LICENCE

The license of these half-width katakana fonts and accompanying files
in this package (see Section 3 FILES) is GPL (GNU Public License)
Version 2 or higher, see URL: http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html.

The original Wadalab fonts by TANAKA Tetsuro
(ktanaka@tanaka.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp) are available from the URL:
ftp.ipl.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp and are licensed under a DFSG-free license
given in ISO-2022-JP encoding at the URL:
ftp://ftp.dante.de/pub/tex/support/ghostscript/3rdparty/fonts/kanji/README.nihongo.

Modifications to the Wadalab fonts were carried out using the wftodm
patch by Werner Lemberg licensed under GPL, and the resultant Type 1
font file dgjkata.pfb was used as the basis for these half-width
katakana fonts.

4 - INSTALLATION

The texmf tree provides a standard TDS. The files in this
distribution mimic the structure of this tree. You have to install
the following files in one of your texmf trees (or create a new one).
It is important to first install the Wadalab fonts, since this package
relies on the Wadalab installation and supplies some alternative
subfonts replacing those of the Wadalab-supplied subfonts. The
installation will then overwrite these subfonts with the alternative
ones from this package, thus you should keep the original ones for
when you uninstall this package.

* dgjhw.pfb:  $TEXMF/fonts/type1/wadalab/dgjhw/

* dgjhw.map:    $TEXMF/fonts/map/dvips/dgjhw/

% Note: Those files overwrite existing ones!

5 - CONFIGURATION

After installing the files and new directories, you should run

% sudo texhash

Then run updmap-sys

% sudo updmap-sys --enable Map dgjhw.map

If you don't have updmap-sys or don't want to use it:

. For dvips, add this line in config.ps:

      p +dgjhw.map

. For pdf(la)tex add this line in pdftex.cfg:

      map +dgjhw.map

. Following this you need to run again

      % sudo texhash

please contact me.

6 - USAGE

The Wadalab fonts must be available first, so that the "min", "goth"
and "maru" typefaces can be used. To these typefaces are now added
newly the half-width katakana glyphs.

When writing in SJIS encoded files, the command \CJKhwkatakana must be
used in the document to activate the use of half-width katakana
(\CJKnohwkatakana converts them to full-width katakana). Then,
half-width katakana can be entered at the keyboard and be present in
the output.

When writing UTF8 encoded files, no special commands are needed;
half-width katakana can simply be entered at the keyboard and are
automatically handled by the CJK package. The \CJKnohwkatakana will
convert all entered half-width katakana to full-width in the output,
and vice versa for \CJKhwkatakana.

No support is currently provided for the use of half-width katakana in
EUC encoded files.

7 - DERIVATION

The modified (by wftodm patch, see Section 1 LICENSE) Wadalab Gothic
Type 1 full-width katakana font file dgjkata.pfb was used as the basis
for the half-width katakana font of this package. Fontforge was used
to edit the glyphs and create the .pfb and .tfm files.

To make the virtual font for UTF8 encoding, clonevf.pl from the CJK
package repository was used to make a mapped copy (to itself) of
dgjhw.tfm. The vf file was converted to vpl, and the entries modified
to reflect a mapping from UTF8 to SJIS. Then they were added, along
with a reference to the mapped font, to the .vpl version of the
existing Wadalab udgjff.vf. Then new .vf and .tfm were created from
udgjff.vpl.

Download the contents of this package in one zip archive (87.8k).
