README
This is the README for version 2.209 of Peter S. Baker's Junicode family of fonts (2024-07-17). The Junicode font is primarily for scholars and students of the Middle Ages, but it serves users with a wide variety of interests. It tracks the development of the Medieval Unicode Font Initiative (MUFI), with its wealth of specialized medieval characters, but it also provides many OpenType features that allow users to access MUFI characters in accessible ways. This version of Junicode adds more than forty new glyphs for the Ansund project. It also adjusts the slant of proportional old-style figures; fixes an occasional problem with the combining dot accent; adds a couple of archaic phonetic characters; and fixes a bug that prevented the correct operation of a shortcut key combination in Adobe InDesign. This package supports the Junicode static fonts for XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX and [pdf]LaTeX. To install this package on a TDS-compliant TeX system download the file "tex-archive"/install/fonts/junicode.tds.zip where the preferred URL for "tex-archive" is http://mirrors.ctan.org. Unzip the archive at the root of an appropriate texmf tree, likely a personal or local tree. If necessary, update the file-name database (e.g., texhash). Update the font-map files by enabling the Map file Junicode.map. Load Junicode in the usual way, with \usepackage{junicode}. Several options are available: light The weight of the type for the main text is Light instead of Regular. medium The weight of the type for the main text is Medium, somewhat heavier than Regular. semibold The weight of bold type is somewhat lighter than the usual bold. This may be a good choice if you have selected the light option. condensed The width of the type is narrow. Note that bold type cannot be condensed: when this option is selected, any bold type in the text will have normal width. semicondensed The width of the type is narrower than the default but wider than condensed. Note that bold type cannot be semicondensed: when this option is selected, any bold type in the text will have normal width. expanded The width of the type is wide. Note that light type cannot be expanded: using both the light and the expanded options will produce an error. semiexpanded The width of the type is wider than the default but narrower than expanded. Note that light type cannot be semiexpanded: using both the light and the semiexpanded options will produce an error. The following commands allow local use of specific figure styles: \oldstylenums, \liningnums, \tabularnums, \proportionalnums, \textsu{..}, \textinf{..}. The following font encodings are supported if type1 fonts are used: OT1,T1,TS1,LY1,LGR Selecting Alternate Styles The Junicode font comes in thirty-eight styles: nineteen roman and nineteen italic. You can switch to any of these styles with one of the following commands, which will be self-explanatory if you keep these abbreviations in mind: Sm = Semi, Cond = Condensed, Exp = Expanded. \jBold \jBoldItalic \jCond \jCondItalic \jCondLight \jCondLightItalic \jCondMedium \jCondMediumItalic \jExp \jExpItalic \jExpBold \jExpBoldItalic \jExpMedium \jExpMediumItalic \jExpSmbold \jExpSmboldItalic \jItalic \jLight \jLightItalic \jMedium \jMediumItalic \jRegular \jSmbold \jSmboldItalic \jSmCond \jSmCondItalic \jSmCondLight \jSmCondLightItalic \jSmCondMedium \jSmCondMediumItalic \jSmExp \jSmExpItalic \jSmExpBold \jSmExpBoldItalic \jSmExpMedium \jSmExpMediumItalic \jSmExpSmbold \jSmExpSmboldItalic There are additional commands and options for use with LuaLaTeX and XeLaTeX; see JunicodeManual.pdf in the doc directory. The otf and ttf fonts have been downloaded from https://github.com/psb1558/Junicode-font and are licensed under the SIL Open Font License (version 1.1); the text may be found in the doc directory. The pfb fonts were generated by cfftot1. The documentation and the LuaLaTeX/XeLaTeX support are by Peter Baker and are licensed under the terms of the LaTeX Project Public License. The (pdf)LaTeX support is by Bob Tennent using autoinst and is licensed under the terms of the LaTeX Project Public License. The maintainer of this package is Bob Tennent (rdtennent at gmail dot com).

Junicode – A TrueType and OpenType font family for mediaevalists
Junicode is a TrueType/OpenType font family with many features for antiquarians (especially medievalists) based on typefaces used by the Oxford Press in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It works well with Lua(La)TeX or Xe(La)TeX, but the basic textual features are also available with (pdf)LaTeX.
