The package "paracol" is now compatible with "color" and its relatives, and now has new functions to make footnotes in all columns merged and single-columned, and to make (unbalanced) columns swapped in even pages.

paracol – Multiple columns with texts “in parallel”
The package provides yet another multi-column typesetting mechanism by which you produce multi-column (e.g., bilingual) document switching and sychronizing each corresponding part in “parallel”.
