The LaTeX package 'noitcrul' provides an \underline-variant without italics correction at the end, for math. This sometimes gives better-looking formulas.

noitcrul – Improved underlines in mathematics
The package provides a (maths mode) \underline variant which doesn’t impose italics correction at the end.
