\mppattern{<name>} ... \endmppattern defines a tiling pattern which can be used with 'withpattern' operator to fill a closed path by replicating the tile horizontally and vertically. \begin{mppattern} ... \end{mppattern} is exactly the same as \mppattern ... \endmppattern. See luamplib manual for details.

luamplib – Use LuaTeX’s built-in METAPOST interpreter
The package enables the user to specify METAPOST diagrams (which may include colour specifications from the color or xcolor packages) into a document, using LuaTeX’s built-in METAPOST library.
The facility is only available in PDF mode.
